I love the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane - despite being between major exhibitions at the moment their permanent collections are still incredible. It was wonderful to see Archie’s Moore’s installation ‘Kith and kin’ from the Venice Bienniale ❤️

The winner of the 2025 $100,000 Hadley’s Art Prize is Sophie Cape!

Judges’ Comments:
A strong embodied, site-responsive, and honest record of environmental upheaval, of land torn by flood and landslide. It portrays the Australian landscape not by illustration, but rather direct material presence made in collaboration with the elements with the artist working directly within the aftermath of natural events. Combining the gathering of raw and found materials from the environment with the expressive force of the artist’s body, it exults in this confluence, melding matter, natural marks and a perceptible, visceral relationship between human presence in the non-human world. The artist brings an almost primal energy to the work, but with instinct and finesse, produces a compelling work of balance and refinement.

A former professional athlete, Sophie Cape turned to art after years of sport-related injuries. Cape’s practice is deeply tied to the raw forces of nature and the physicality of the body, the artist often immersing herself in the landscape and using locally-sourced natural materials, such as soil, rust and charcoal, to render instinctual acts of expression.

In this painting, René Magritte renders his most iconic figure – the bowler-hatted man – floating in the sky like so many droplets of rain.

The ubiquitous everyman appears in more than 50 artworks throughout the artist’s oeuvre and is depicted no less than 172 times in this painting.

The title ‘Golconda’ was found by Magritte’s friend Louis Scutenaire, who bore a remarkable resemblance to one of the larger figures floating near the roofline of the building, looking directly at the viewer.

I love Richard Estes’ realist paintings!
Born in 1932 and raised in the Chicago area, Richard Estes studied at the Institute of Chicago from 1952 to 1956. In 1959, he moved to New York City, where he has resided ever since. Over the last 45 years, Estes has widened his subjects to include the human figure and images of epic natural landscapes inspired by Maine and his wide travels abroad. His compositions are incredibly precise and detailed. “Though figures are often present in his work, they are—like most passersby in public spaces— anonymous and uncommunicative.”

Look closer, and you’ll see it’s telling a story of our time, depicting scenes of people wearing masks, queuing at Centrelink, and bulk buying toilet paper, all while glued to their mobile phones.

Reinterpreting ancient glass techniques, Jessica Murtagh’s contemporary artworks playfully capture her observations and journey through the twists and turns of the last few years.

I love her work!

Jakayu Biljabu grew up on Manyjilyjarra Country in Western Australia and her paintings celebrate the sandhills, claypans and salt lakes of her desert landscape. In a riot of extraordinary vitality and finely controlled colour, ‘Minyi Puru’ reveals Biljabu’s intimate knowledge of Country. Through a loose iconography, it maps where she was born and the area around Nyilangkurr where she spent time as a child.

In Bourgeois’s art, spiders relate to her mother Joséphine, a tapestry restorer, who the artist described as ‘deliberate, clever, patient, soothing ... and [as] useful as a spider’.

Like Joséphine, a spider is precise and constructive, with a talent for weaving. Like an artist, a spider works with her body to create shelter and structure. ‘If you bash into the web of a spider,‘ Bourgeois said, ‘she doesn‘t get mad. She weaves and repairs it.‘

Congratulations to Sydney-based artist Julia Gutman, who has won the Archibald Prize 2023 for her portrait, 'Head in the sky, feet on the ground', of singer-songwriter Montaigne.

A first-time #ArchibaldPrize finalist, Gutman is a multi-disciplinary artist who reuses found textiles to produce painted ‘patchworks’ that merge personal and collective histories to explore themes of femininity, intimacy and memory.

Gutman was delighted and amazed on hearing the news. ‘I’m so elated and overwhelmed to have won,' she said. 'Shocked, dumbfounded, but very happy. It’s honestly completely surreal. I’m so grateful to be working at a time when young female voices are heard'.

‘So much of my practice is devoted to revisiting, critiquing and contending with the histories housed in institutions. It’s so affirming for that conversation to be recognised in such a public way,' Gutman said.

'Montaigne and I have been friends for a few years and there is a lot of alignment in our practices; we are both interested in creating our own forms and approaches rather than strictly adhering to any one tradition,' said Gutman. 'Montaigne's work defies genres, while her mercurial soprano has become an indelible part of the fabric of Australian music.’

Montaigne is a Sydney-based singer who has become an important figure on the Australian indie music scene, winning an ARIA award in 2016 and representing Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. She is the first female musician to be the subject of an Archibald Prize winning portrait.
